James Desvarreaux-Larpenteur (American, 1847-1937). Oil on canvas, ca. late 19th century. Signed "DESVARREUX" at lower right. A beautiful pastoral landscape painting by artist James Desvarreux-Larpenteur. A shepherdess and her dog sit in a bucolic field surrounded by a flock of sheep with a grove of tall leafy oak trees in the distance. Desvarreux-Larpenteur studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and worked under Pils and Yvon. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1879 and upon returning to the United States specialized in paintings that featured sheep or cattle residing in tranquil landscapes. Signed "DESVARREUX" at lower right. Painting shows with vivid imagery and strong hues. Areas of craquelure, but composition is stable. Appears to have been relined and possibly conserved. No in painting. Verso shows some staining to gallery tape around perimeter and areas of separation between the gallery tape and the canvas at the corners. Frame has a few chips and scuffs as shown. Fit with suspension wire.
