Vintage handcrafted soapstone tealight, candle or incense holder, unmarked, probably India.

The holder is 3.1/2" [8.9cm] tall without base, the opening is 2" [5.1cm] across at the bottom and c.1.3/4" [4.5cm] across at the top; the base is 3" [7.6cm] across, the boarded space for candle or tealight is c.1.5/8" [4.1cm] across; no chips, very good condition.

Soapstone is also known as steatite or soaprock and has been used for carving for well over two thousand years. Some forms of soapstone are quite soft and may feel soapy when touched, which is how it acquired its name.
