Victor Rios (American, XXI). Lidded Ceramic Vessel, 2008. Signed and dated on shoulder of vessel. A unique and quite sizeable lidded polychrome pottery vessel by contemporary artist Victor Rios, presenting a lentoid body supported by three spherical feet and a tiered lid with a crescent-shaped handle. While the form is quite attractive, Rios' treatment of the surfaces is even more visionary. The composition features an imaginative blend of geometric and puzzle-shaped motifs that Rios outlined with a carving tool and embellished in vibrant shades of ruby red, lilac purple, buttercup yellow, and leafy green as well as sienna, black, white, and a wonderful metallic hue that resembles oxidized silver. In addition, sporadically placed geometric tiles or appliques imbue the surface with a playful textural quality.
