Description
Native American, Southeastern United States, likely Cherokee, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A carved stone pipe in the form of a canine - perhaps a fox, dog, or coyote, the receptacle bowl behind the snarling head, and stem opening on the rear end. Tobacco was used in ceremonial contexts, the smoke carrying prayers to the great beyond, helped by the totemic guides on the pipe. Size: 4.5" L x 1.75" W x 2" H (11.4 cm x 4.4 cm x 5.1 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
