Lee and Ditko's "The Man Who Captured Death!" in ish #9 is a watered-down post-Code revision of Joe Maneely's "I Am Death!" from Adventures Into Weird Worlds #23 (Oct., 1953). Both stories feature scientists who find a way to stop death from claiming victims, only to find that their actions have upset the cycle of life with catastrophic effects. In Maneely's version, diseased patients writhe in their hospital beds, howling for the sweet release of death ("Ooow! If I could only die – LET ME DIE!"). In the Code-friendly Ditko version, the bedridden victims suffer in stoic silence.
