Notes:
Hayley Lever was born in Australia, but he moved to Europe as a young man to expand his artistic career. He settled in St. Ives, a fishing port and artistic colony on the English coast. He painted extensively here as well as the French ports of Douarnenez and Concarneau, which were located directly across the English channel. Works from this period remain some of the most important and desirable works by the artist, and the painting offered here likely features one of these harbors.

While in Europe, Lever worked with many of the top Impressionists and was also influenced by Van Gogh, going as far to produce a series of works titled ìVan Gogh's Hospital, Holland" to show his appreciation and respect for the artist.

This work offered is undoubtedly one of the finest Levers we have had the pleasure of handling. It hints at the influence of Van Gogh but shows the artist at his most confident, with bold and dramatic brushwork and masterful understanding of natural light.
