Three images added, scroll through 12 images. Important Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Jean de Strelecki WWI sculpture 1919 exhibition original photograph survey album. Astounding photographic survey Impressions of the War comprising aprx 26 original black and white Jan de Strelecki fine art photography prints on tipped in loose binder mounts depicting individual and group images of WWI Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney sculptures in compelling dramatically lit fashion, the prints 7.5 x 9.5 inches, the page mounts 10.625 x 13.625 inches excluding binder hole margins, each print with embossed artist name stamp, prints for which the backs were examined additionally with artist ink stamp, 25 total pages as one page double sided, gilt titled leather bound. Additionally present is an additional de Strelecki photo, unmounted, lacking an embossed stamp but with a rear ink stamp as well as 3 Peter Jouley GVW WWI sculpture photos, 1 with a pencil signed mat and 2 with rear ink stamps and five GVW WWI frieze photos, a pair of plaster and a pair of the same works in bronze plus one duplicate, all unsigned and unidentified plus a 1920 loose unmatted Wm C Watt GVW WWI sculpture gravure on paper signed as part of the printed image. Also present is a binder page with a tipped paper mount present and photo absent. Jan de Strelecki was the Polish French American collegue of Baron Adolph de Meyer in Paris documenting Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitneys profound World War One sculpture series, some of which were sold in our January auction and another work, Blinded, that is included in this sale. Mrs. Whitney included Strelecki, de Meyer, Genthe and Steiglitz in a New York Portraiture exhibition, ref sc dot edu. Album measures 11 x 16 x 1.75 inches overall, no binder rings. Note: Photos good, cover poor, please see condition report.Provenance: The Vanderbilt Whitney Family Archive from the landmark Old Westbury, Long Island, NY studio former residence of noted sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum and great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, removed by our staff this spring during real estate staging. Comprising over 500 to 1000 items offered as 50 to 100 lots including the Cornelius Vanderbilt era, late Victorian photography including Yale athletics and fraternal photography, important Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Flora Whitney items including soiree costumes and couture as well as love letters, documents, equestrian memorabilia, ephemera and more. A once in a lifetime glimpse into family threads that are forever woven into the American experience of a nature seldom seen on the market. The Studio, decorated with murals by prominent Gilded Age to Art Deco artist colleagues and the site of legendary soirees attended by a Whos Who of actors, painters and philanthropists, has been listed for sale, emptied of contents and staged for its real estate sale listing. Earlier this year our firm was commissioned by the Vanderbilt Whitney family owners to offer 22 lots of GVW sculpture and 32 lots of paintings, important silver, jewelry, fine art photography, decorative arts and Chinese antiques descended in multiple branches and generations of the Vanderbilt Whitney family. We are now excited to present a second sale including the Vanderbilt Whiney Archive and Important Studio Garden Sculpture and Decorations. All lots but the 18 large garden sculpture and annex decorations have been transported to our Florida facilities, including Archive items, for FL pick up or shipping with the 18 large garden sculpture and decorative arts now in Greater NY NJ CT TriState area storage for pick up 1 hour from Manhattan. Florida previews are 1 person at a time for specific advance requested lots by appt at our St. Petersburg, FL warehouse from Saturday July 15th through Friday July 21st as items are not staged for exhibition and are securely housed outside of preview times at multiple locations. ALSO NOTE: There is no in person preview available for the 18 large garden sculpture and decorations stored in the Greater NY NJ CT TriState area. Their preview is photo only. Note the sale is online only with no in person auction audience or warehouse activity the day of sale or the Sunday after the sale.
Condition
Photos generally rich and sound on browned mounts with faded and edge worn pages, binder very worn with spine separations and back corner detached and largely deteriorated, loose photos and gravure a bit curled, soiled and tattered, back cover deteriorating to the touch. ALSO NOTE: A single Jan de Strelecki photograph of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney from the same Vanderbilt residence brought USD 10,000.00 in our Janurary sale.
