Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney large 4ft youth stone seated stylized nude male sculpture with Roman terracotta urn. 48in x 32in x 21in, no visible signature during initial inspection, the sculpture is accompanied by the urn it rests upon that the family identifies as period roman, it is dated DIV for 504 AD (504 CE), terracotta 32in high x 38in in diameter, detail molding above band with raised cartouches, date of manufacture assumed period but undetermined.Provenance: This is the personal example kept by noted sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum and great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, the storage administrated by our staff at her landmark Old Westbury, Long Island, NY studio this spring during real estate staging. Decorated with murals by prominent Gilded Age to Art Deco artist colleagues and the site of legendary soirees attended by a Whos Who of actors, painters and philanthropists, the property has been listed for sale, emptied of contents and staged for its real estate sale listing.
