A wonderful record of Reconstruction politics in Massachusetts, notably including a signed portrait of African American Representative John James Smith.

John James Smith (1820 – 1906) was an abolitionist and a prominent figure in Massachusetts politics. He served as a three-term state representative and was among the early African-American members of the Boston Common Council. As a member of the Republican Party, Smith held office in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for three terms. Born in Richmond, Virginia, he even participated in the California Gold Rush.

Throughout the 1840s and 50s, Smith's barbershop, located on the northern slope of Beacon Hill, played a crucial role as a hub for abolitionist activities and served as a sanctuary for individuals seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Smith took on the responsibility of recruiting soldiers for the black regiments of Massachusetts.

Notably, during his tenure on the Boston Common Council in 1878, Smith played a pivotal role in the appointment of Boston's first black police officer, showcasing his dedication to breaking barriers and promoting inclusivity within the city.
