Description
1876 Reconstruction-Era North Carolina Republican Illustrated Broadside
Republican County Canvass. Craven County, [North Carolina]: N.p., [1876]. Signed in type by Robert Hancock, Jr. (1844-1913). Provenance previously sold as Lot 104, Cowan’s Auctions, 12-13 November 2003.
A Republican campaign broadside from Craven County in eastern North Carolina. Featuring a spread-winged eagle clutching arrows and a riband reading “Rally! Rally!”, the broadside lists meetings where Republican candidates will speak around the county. Though undated, the dates correspond to the 1876 presidential election, which also aligns with the life dates of Robert Hancock, Jr. who is enumerated in Craven County in the Federal Censuses from 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900.
The fiercely contentious 1876 presidential election was hard fought in North Carolina. Although the state would give its votes to Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, the efforts of Hancock and the Craven County Republicans were effective as 67.9% of Craven County voted overwhelmingly for Republican Rutherford B. Hayes.
A very rare political broadside, this is the only known copy at the time of cataloging. OCLC locates no other copies, and online records indicate only this copy ever sold at auction.
