Description
Two highly detailed soldier memorials specially made for members of the famous Civil War unit “Berdan's Sharpshooters.” Each memorial depicts the design of the national monument to the Grand Army of the Republic.
One memorial, produced c. 1897, details the service history of Private Squaring Heineck, Company G (Wisconsin) 1st U.S. Sharpshooters. Heineck was an original enlistee in his company and served throughout the war, appearing to be present with his company until mustering out at Petersburg, Virginia in November 1864. The memorial was presented to his wife Mary in 1897. Measures 34” by 21” overall.
The second memorial, produced c. 1894, details the service of Private Charles L. Dudley, Company G (New Hampshire) 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters. Dudley enlisted in 1861, re-enlisted for a second three-year term in late 1863, and transferred into the 5th New Hampshire Infantry upon the dissolution of the 2nd USSS in February 1865. He was finally discharged in late June of that year. Dudley's memorial outlines the “qualifying shoot” required of all prospective sharpshooters as well as the more famous battles his regiment participated in. Presented to his wife “Mary A.” in 1894. Measures 37” by 23.” In-house shipping is not available for this lot.
Note: consult the specific dimensions of each memorial. Cover photo represents them as being equal, but there is a small size difference between the two.
