(to top of handle), W: 5.5 in., D: 8.75 in.Isaac A. van Amburgh (1808-65) was an American animal trainer, of Dutch descent. His daring performances with wild jungle animals became famous, and his popularity contributed to the gradual merging of menageries into circus acts. His act was set in ancient times, he wore Roman attire and was known as "The Brute Tamer of Pompeii." In fact, he was notorious for his domineering and cruel treatment of the animals. He gave performances in England during the years 1838-39, at such places as Drury Lane Theatre and Astley's Amphitheatre. Queen Victoria enjoyed his shows, apparently attending seven times in six weeks, and stayed behind once to watch the animals being fed.Provenance: Elva Needles Antiques, Kansas City, Missouri.
