Lauren Britton, sunset xl. Lauren Britton studied at the Purchase College of Art and Design, and now lives in New Haven. She is painting about queer bodily experience using icons and signifiers. Over the past year, she has investigated in the rainbow as a signifier and has recently been thinking about the problematic nature of the rainbow in queer culture. The rainbow is problematic because it signifies the celebration of a queer experience while also evoking a painful history that my work, through texture and color, can evoke or veil. She is also interested in depicting the bodily through form however do not necessarily want to name body parts in my work. By allowing the body to be associative, I find this creates the space for a discussion about the gender binary, the dissociative experience of a transgendered body, and the experience of a body that does not line up with hetero-normative culture.
