Description
TWO 18TH C. HAND-COLORED ETCHINGS
Italian, 18th century, etching. A portrait of Albrecht Durer by Johann Martin Preisler after Giovanni Domenico Ferretti, c. 1740s, disassembled and reframed, laid against thick stock, together with a heraldic image by Hubert Vincent of two dolphin-tailed men (Tritons) holding cornucopias (with Naval implications) beneath a family crest with six-spired crown centered by a fleur-de-lis.
While the crest on the Vincent work bears six red balls and not the Medici five with a central ball in blue, the crown is similar to ones on Medici crest and the overall image may be affiliated.
Preisler sheet: 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. (31.8 x 21.6 cm.); Vincent plate: 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. (26 x 18.4 cm.), sheet: 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. (34.3 x 24.1 cm.)
Ex Iowa Wesleyan University collection
