Finely carved as a recumbent buffalo, its legs tucked under, with head turned to one side, the large curled horns supported on its humped back, a boy sitting astride its thigh, holding a leafy branch on one hand and the other resting on buffalo head, the back of the buffalo strapped with a straw hat, the stone is of black and white tone. Qing Dynasty period, 18th century.
Width: 7 3/4 in (19.7 cm) Height: 4 in (10.2 cm) Length: 5 3/4 in (14.6 cm)
清中期 18世纪 黑白玉巧雕牧童水牛擺件
The reclining buffalo, symbol of strength as well as tranquility, is a classic icon of Chinese painting. Depicted with a young boy riding on its back this powerful giant beast becomes a symbol of obedience and serenity. Even a small child can ride an animal of this size and strength without fear. The child and buffalo also represent the country-side, the essence of Chinese life. Furthermore, buffalos are associated with Daoism and are linked with nature and the philosophy of Laozi. As jade artefacts they are among the most impressive pieces produced by the Chinese carvers. The subject matter appears to be especially well suited for this medium as well.A comparable white jade carving featuring a buffalo and a boy can be found in the Suzhou Museum, located in Jiangsu, China.(image 1)
Provenance: From a prestigious private collection, acquired from antique market in Paris, France between 2000-2002.
