Description
Rare French automaton attributed to Phalibois, consists of an oval-shaped scene with four dancing figures on top, three female and one male in apparently late 18th century attire and wigs. Papier-mâché constructed base of the scene is oval-shaped and is placed on a oval-shaped wooden frame with claw feet. Intended to be an outdoor garden scene in a French château with the flags of nobility, faux flowers and plants lining the entire base. Underneath the formation from within are the mechanisms and music box that begin to play when the string on the side is pulled, and the trigger release depressed. At which time, music plays and the four figures dance around up and down, and around in a circle. Protecting the entire arrangement is a oval-shaped glass dome, which sits into a fitted groove around the top of the base. Mechanism works relatively well with strong music. Condition: (Very Good). Dimensions: 13 - 1/2" x 7 - 1/2" x 15 - 1/2".
