Description
1924 Battle of Bunker Hill Earl Percy Dines Abroad Pasquale Paoli James Boswell
Harold Murdocks “Earl Percy Dines Abroad” is an early 20th-century account of a dinner given in London by Pasquale Paoli honoring Earl Percy in 1778. The Preface of this edition supplies the best description:
“The title of this book was suggested by an earlier work, published in 1907, entitled “Earl Percys Dinner Table.” This was an account of an imaginary dinner given by his Lordship in Boston at the house which he occupied in 1775. The present book concerns an actual dinner given in London by General Paoli, the Corsican patriot, in honor of Early Percy in 1778. The reader will note that this dinner was of peculiar interest to Mr. (James) Boswell, who at the time was making his home with General Paoli in London.”
This 1924 limited edition was numbered no. 162 of 550 and includes illustrations of Paoli, Boswell, William Dodd, James Oglethorpe, Thomas Hutchinson, and perhaps most desirably, a sketch of “Action between the British Forces and the American Provincials on the Heights of the Peninsula of Charlestown (more commonly called Battle of Bunker Hill)”
