BARON PIOTR KARLOVICH KLODT VON JURGENSBURG (RUSSIAN 1805-1867), "Bust of Catherine the Great," circa 1850, bronze with light brown patina, height: 29 cm (11 3/8 in.), modeled and cast by Baron Piotr Klodt, inscribed'Klodt' in Cyrillic on the left shoulder. Unlike some other sculptors of the day, Klodt was a master of both modeling and casting and would stamp his own sculpture with a Cyrillic version of his name. As the comparable reference materials show, Klodt would incscribe his name without the Russian "D", as in the present sculpture.
