Description
A RARE JAPANESE ARITA 'RECLINING BIJIN' CANDLESTICK HOLDER Edo period, circa 1710 Modeled in the round as a reclining woman in a kimono, one hand supporting the body and the other raised and unusually holding a sconce. 9 x 10in (23 x 25.5cm) Footnotes: This appears to be a rare form with few other examples recorded. Most such figures are standing maidens and possibly this was intended to create a mantel garniture, sitting between a pair of the standing type.
