Description
1847 Southern Baptist Hymnal Bible Psalmist Christian Songs Music Choir Worship
“The Psalmist,” compiled by Baron Stow and Samuel Francis Smith, is a 19th-century book of hymns specifically designed for Baptist churches. The collection is notable for its diverse range of hymns from various authors, including Dr. Watts, Beddome, Steele, and Doddridge. The hymns were chosen for their lyrical spirit, suitability for worship, and their ability to evoke deep and true emotion.
In response to the demand for more popular hymns in the South, Richard Fuller and Jeremiah Bell Jeter compiled and added a supplement to the collection in 1847. This supplement aimed to make the hymnal more appealing to Baptists in the South and West by including popular Southern hymns and removing unused chants. The supplement was dedicated to enhancing social worship and fostering a stronger sense of spirituality.
“The Psalmist” was a groundbreaking hymnal for its time, serving as the first book of hymns published by a national Baptist body in America. Its comprehensive selection of hymns and focus on emotional connection made it a significant resource for Baptist congregations in the 19th century.
