Relief Portrait of a Man signed K. Rissanen, Finland c. 1940. Relief-carved wooden plaque depicting head and shoulder portrait of gentleman, possibly an architect, wearing a tie decorated with tiered masonry arches, later mounted to frame, 43cm wide, 2cm deep, 50cm high (17 1/4in wide, 1 1/2in deep, 20 1/2in high). Footnotes: Note Artists K. Rissanen and T. Alikyla began producing torch-shaded bas-relief carvings on Klobbol wood during the Russo-Finnish war in 1939. Portraits by the pair are in numerous international collections, including the National Trust (UK) and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. Provenance Joshua Lowenfels, New York, New York.
