Description
South America, Peru, Inca, post-conquest period, 16th to 17th century CE. A hand-carved wooden drinking vessel called a kero (also quero) with a corseted form, a flat base, and a thick rim. The exterior is decorated with polychrome pigment illustrating a horse as well as a striding figure dressed in Spanish clothing amongst a field of foliate and vegetal motifs. Size: 5.4" W x 5.75" H (13.7 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

Condition
Old repairs and damage to vessel, but structure is still intact despite several large fissures. Minor abrasions to pigment and underlying wood, with small chips, and light earthen deposits. Nice preservation to pigment in most areas, and smooth patina throughout.
