Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful pottery figure of a female shown seated with bulbous legs gently bent before her. Displaying wide hips and a sizeable posterior, the ancient figure gazes forward with attenuated arms bending at the elbows for both hands to rest on her bulging belly. Her stylized visage presents coffee bean-shaped eyes, a projecting nose, a pointed chin, and full lips held open as though mid-chant, all flanked by a pair of large shell-like ear adornments and crowned by a petite headdress and an intricately incised coiffure, pulled back in a double ponytail. Though nude, she is adorned by several armbands, necklaces, and anklets, while her square shoulders are decorated with stippling, perhaps representing ceremonial scarification and liberal remains of red, black, and beige pigments further embellish the surface. Size: 5.2" W x 8.6" H (13.2 cm x 21.8 cm)
