1846 Charleston, SC. Slave Auctioneer & Merchant Token Remnants of Silver Plating, Unlisted in Rulau as "Silvered"
1846-Dated. "W. Wilbur Auction & Commission Merchant," Charleston, South Carolina, Slave Auctioneer Token, Remnants of Silver Plating, Unlisted in Rulau Silvered, Very Fine.
27 mm. Original struck Brass Slave Auctioneer Token dated 1846, with the logo of an "Auctioneer" with his gavel in hand on one side, and with the legend reading, "W. Wilbur Auction & Commission Merchant - 1846 - Charleston SO. CA. Going at Only a Penny." The reverse features a wonderful SC. Palmetto Tree motif with the text, "Merchants and Manufacturers Agent, Collection Broker, Notary Public & c.". Well centered and struck having no major detractions and clear legends. Rare with light traces of original Silvering on the Brass among the lettering. Unlisted by Rulau as known "Silvered" Brass. The first example we have seen and offered with traces of original Silvering.
