Description

Amenhotep I Piece of Burial Cloth, Ca. 1504 BC- Ex. Bonhams London

A .5" piece of burial cloth excavated from the mummy of Amenophis I, commonly referred to as Amenhotep I, whose reign spanned approximately 20 years between 1525-1504 BC. Taken from a larger piece originally acquired from Bonhams London on March 13, 1997. Several fibers of cloth have been detached from the main piece, exhibiting darkened soiling throughout, otherwise intact. Encapsulated by CAG to the overall size of 2.5" x 3.5" and verified authentic.

Amenophis I (b.?-1504 BC) was the second Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt. A middle son of Ahmose I and Ahmose-Nefertari, he was originally not expected to inherit the throne but upon the death of the heir apparent would become crown prince. Although the reign of Amenophis I has been poorly documented, historians have been able to infer of his time as Pharaoh that he maintained dominance over Nubia and the Nile Delta inherited by his father's conquests and continued the rebuilding of temples in Upper Egypt, revolutionizing the design of mortuary complexes by separating his tomb from his mortuary temple.

Today, Amenhophis I remains the only royal mummy which has not been unwrapped and examined by modern Egyptologists. While his body was X-rayed several times throughout the 20th century, a non-invasive CT scan conducted in 2019 revealed that he was likely around age 35 at the time of his death. Recently in 2021, his mummy was relocated to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo where it is housed among numerous other kings and queens of antiquity.
