Dante's Inferno (183 pages plus illustrations) and Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso (337 pages plus illustrations). Both printed by Cassell in New York City. Undated, but likely circa 1870s. Hardcover red cloth. Both volumes profusely illustrated with full-page plates and tissue guards. Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was an influential French illustrator, best known for his woodcuts of biblical and classical works, including the works of Dante. MEASUREMENTS: Both 15-1/4" high x 12-1/4" wide. CONDITION: Both with rubbing and staining to boards. Dante's Inferno is more worn, with loss to the bottom of half of spine and sections of pages detached from the text block. Purgatorio and Paradiso has split hinges at front and back and a detached front end page. Occasional marginalia and markings. Both opportunities for restoration and preservation. AJ.
