Notes:
Interestingly, the 42-star flag was never an official U.S. flag. North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Washington were admitted to the Union within days of each other in November 1889, bringing the number of states from 38 to 42, but star counts don't become official until the 4th of July each year. Idaho gained statehood July 3, 1890, taking the count to 43 just one day before 42 would have become the official number of stars. Flag makers, however, often did not wait for the official count and made updated flags as states were admitted.
