Description
Almost certainly Confederate Used P-1853 Enfield Rifle Musket:Overall NRA Good to Very Good condition. The 1863 date on the lock is significant. Most Enfield muskets dated 1863 and 1864 went to the South. By this time the North was in full production of Springfield pattern muskets at the Springfield Arsenal and by the dozens of contractors also in the loop. The US no longer needed an infusion of second class arms from Europe, but the South still needed them desperately. Barrel has standard 25 * 25 * Birmingham proof on the .577 caliber barrel. Rear sight is gone and the bore is reamed smooth otherwise it is all original and complete. Dark wood. Dark steel. Shows wartime use but no abuse. Tight. Solid. Honest and most likely shipped to the Confederacy. (1864 dated examples with the 25* 25* barrel marks are truly rare. I've only seen three or four in my life. 1863 examples are very scarce as well and far rarer than 1861 and 62 dates.) Mechanically fine.
