The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is said to be one of the ten best known poems in the world, and probably the most popular piece of Middle Eastern literature in the Western World. There are hundreds of editions published from Fitzgeralds various translations alone. American symbolist artist Elihu Vedder (d.1923) is best known for his illustrations of the Rubáiyát which were some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America. Vedder is also known for his mural work in Collis P. Huntingtons mansion, the Walker Art Gallery at Bowdoin College, and the Library of Congress.
This 1894 English edition is a beautiful printing of the RubaÌiyaÌt, featuring the famed Vedder illustrations. The collection of Persian stories dates to the 11th-century and covers a wide variety of topics including philosophy, mysticism, and Sufi and pre-Islamic beliefs.
