Description
Diane Arbus was an American photographer known for her distinctive black-and-white photographs of individuals on the margins of society. She was born in New York City on March 14, 1923, and died by suicide on July 26, 1971, at the age of 48. Arbus started her photography career in the 1940s, initially working with her husband Allan Arbus as a fashion photographer. However, in the 1960s, she shifted her focus to photographing marginalized individuals such as dwarfs, giants, transgender people, and circus performers, among others. Her images were often unsettling, as they portrayed her subjects in stark detail, exposing the vulnerabilities and complexities of their lives. Arbus's work was exhibited widely during her lifetime and has continued to be the subject of numerous retrospectives and critical studies since her death. Her legacy has had a profound impact on the field of photography, particularly in the areas of documentary and portraiture, and her images remain some of the most iconic and memorable in the medium's history.
