Description
Massim Culture Large Stirring Spatula, Trobriand Islands, Early 20th C. Large food paddle with typically active Massim zoomorphic and curvilinear patterns embellishing the top of the tool. A snake like figure slithers down the long handle on both sides. The handle is flattened in cross section with gracefully curved edge that lends a gentle sweeping arc gesture to this beautifully crafted utilitarian object. The blade has a worm hole on one side that holds residual food. Faintly visible on the paddle blade is the Moriarty catalogue # 2347 in pencil. Provenance: Stan Moriarty, Sydney, Australia; Leo and Lillian Fortess, Kaneohe, Hawaii; Stephen Meder; IMEPA Collection #2.F.11, Philadelphia, PA. Size: 46.25'' x 4.5'' x 1'' (117 x 11 x 3 cm).
