Description

A George III oak tall case clock
Robert Downes, London
late 18th century
The arched painted dial with subsidiary strike/silent, seconds and date dials inscribed Robt Downes / LONDON, the twin train movement striking on a bell.
height 81in (206cm); width 18in (46cm); depth 9 1/2in (24cm)

Condition

The case with later finials. Vertical crack to plinth. Bracket feet possibly replaced. General marks, nicks, scratches, rubbing and wear. The dial with scattered areas of craquelure and small loss of paint at VII. Lacking calendar hand. Seat board replaced. Dial and movement possibly associated to case. With pendulum and two weights. Working condition unknown and not guaranteed.
