Item Details
Description
Matched dates and visible cartouches. Manufactured by Harpers Ferry Armory in 1860. 58 caliber, single shot muzzle loader with 40" round barrel secured by three barrel bands. Iron mountings including hinged patchbox, with all metal parts finished bright. Steel ramrod with tulip shaped end and swelled shank. Lock markings 1860 with eagle motif on tape primer door, and barrel marking at breech -1860- VP Eagle Head- and -US- on tang of butt plate. There are faint cartouches visible on the counterpane of the stock. A solid honest example Harpers Ferry Rifle musket that was the first U.S. martial arm made to fire the Minie bullet in 58 caliber. Many Harpers Ferry Rifle Muskets were utilized by the Confederacy. In 1861 the capture of the Harpers Ferry Arsenal provided the Confederacy with a windfall of gun making machinery and all of the Model 1855 rifles and rifle muskets on hand at that time. This one dated 1860 was likely in that mix. Consequently, the Harpers Ferry made '55s are far more desirable than their cousins made at Springfield. The Harpers Ferry guns were made in Virginia and a boat load were captured by Virginia Confederates in 1861. They are a solid secondary Confederate longarm, and this is a solid, honest example that shows good wartime use indicative of Confederate service. 100% original, 100% complete, mechanically perfect.
