Description
OLYMPICS: 1932 LAKE PLACID WINTER GAMES.
Participation medal for the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, 1932, bronze, 60 x 48 mm, by the Robbins Company of Attleboro Massachusetts, depicting a winged allegorical figure with trumpet below interlinked Olympic rings on obverse, inscribed 'III Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1932' on reverse, surrounded by images of winter sports, stamped 'Robbins Co. / Attleboro' on upper edge, in original textured paper-covered card box of issue. Slight darkening to finish around a few spots near edges, box slight worn, with interior panels separating.
SCARCE PARTICIPATION MEDAL FOR AMERICA'S FIRST WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES. Only 700 examples of these medals were struck for issue to all athletes and support personnel who took part in the event. The 1932 winter games saw skater Sonja Henie win her second of an eventual three gold medals; it was also introduced the use of the winner's podium to the Winter Olympics, with local hero Jack Shea being the first winter athlete to stand atop the podium to receive his gold medal for speed skating. United States athletes won 12 medals at the event (6 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze) — the only time the U.S. has topped the medals table in the Winter Olympics. Lake Placid would host the event again in 1980.
