North America, United States, Northwestern Nebraska, Chadron Formation, Late Eocene, ca. 35 to 34 million years ago. A collection of 8 fossilized vertebrae bones discovered in the Chadron Formation. The bones are all from the same animal, likely a large mammal - such as Brontotheriidae - a prehistoric ungulate that resembled a rhinoceros but was actually more closely related to horses. The bone structures have fossilized into white stone, and some retain portions of the transverse process. Brontotheriidae sometimes known as titanotheres due to their large size- had large barrel shaped bodies with stout legs, and bone nasal appendages like horns. Their teeth were adapted for browsing the leafy vegetation of the lush forests, but during the Oligocene their environment transformed into scrublands and eventually open grasslands, which led to their decline and eventual extinction. Areas of repair with adhesive residue. Two bones are glued together and remains of adhesive on the others, suggesting these were all attached together. Stable fissures, chips, and losses as expected with fossilization.
