Catalogue Note: Born in Birmingham, England, Thomas Hill (1829-1908) immigrated to the United States in 1844 with his parents, settling in Massachusetts. After an early stint as an apprentice to a carriage and sign painter in Boston, Hill moved to Philadelphia in 1853 and began artistic studies in earnest with Peter Rothermel at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1861, Hill journeyed west to San Francisco, the first of many such trips, where he began to document the Sierra Nevada landscape, particularly the area around Yosemite Valley. After a short period of study in Paris with Paul Meyerheim, Hill returned to California, where he established a studio in San Francisco and began to attract wealthy clients, such as Leland Stanford and the Crocker Family. Known for his panoramic Western views, often executed on a grand scale, Hill is regarded as one of the most important 19th-century painters of the American landscape. The present example, one of three from the Evitt Collection, typifies the artist's mature style, in which he is able to capture the majestic nature of one of the world's most iconic landscapes.
