JAMES HAMILTON YOUNG (SCOTTISH-AMERICAN, 1792-C. 1870) 1856 MAP OF THE UNITED STATES, hand-colored engraving on paper, titled "A NEW / MAP OF THE / UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA / BY J.H. YOUNG" along the right side, published by Charles Desilver, Philadelphia, 1856, featuring the evolving western region, including Nebraska Territory, Utah Territory, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), and Territory of New Mexico, states with extended borders consisting of Washington, Oregon, and Kansas, present day West Virginia is still a part of Virginia, the lower corners have two insets, one of "GOLD REGION / OF / CALIFORNIA" in the lower left, and the other of "DISTRICT / OF / COLUMBIA" in the lower right. Housed under glass in a later frame. Circa 1856. 26 1/4" x 15 3/4" sight, 31 1/4" x 21 5/8" OA.Â

Good to very good visual condition with overall toning, scattered spotting, some fading to watercolor, expected center vertical fold line, frame with some wear, scattered flakes and chips, backing slightly loose from frame. Not examined out of frame.Â
