Description
JAN JANSSONIUS / JANSSON (DUTCH, 1588-1664) MAP OF VIRGINIA, hand-colored engraving on laid paper, titled "NOVA / VIRGINIAE / TABVLA / Petrus Kaerius / Caelvit" in cartouche in upper right corner, engraved by Pieter van den Keere (Flemish, 1571-c.1646), after the work of Captain John Smith, depicting the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding land of Virginia, upper margin with "Befchryvinghe van Virginia ende Florida" in center and page/plate number "749" in right corner. Housed under glass in a modern gilt frame with older backing having "Betsy Kem[son?]kamp. / Gebregen 6 De 1914" handwritten in ink along top and applied gallery label for L.P. Oudewaal of The Haag. Circa 1631. 8 7/8" x 6 1/8" sight, 10 5/8" x7 7/8" OA.
Condition
Good to very good visual condition with overall light toning, some light spotting, light fading to watercolor, right margin with two small losses and a few short tears not affecting image, frame with some wear, a few chips and flakes mostly to corners. Not examined out of frame.
