Description

BALCH SCHOOL-ATTRIBUTED AMERICAN SILK-EMBROIDERED MEMORIAL, silk and chenille on silk with linen backing, depicting an urn on top of a plinth with "JW" or "GW" initials to the front, surrounded by a willow and grass, currently unframed. Together with a period, possibly original, painted frame. Attributed to the Balch School, Providence, Rhode Island (active 1785-1831). Early 19th century. Embroidery 15 3/4" x 12 3/4"; frame 18 1/4" x 15" OA.

Property deaccessioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, Mount Vernon, VA.

Condition

Very good overall condition with light toning to silk ground having some fraying and tears along edges, a short tear near bottom edge, linen with some stains and toning, some thread with fading/fugitive color; frame with some wear, surface scratches, some flakes and losses to paint, slight separation at corners.
