Description
Turner Auctions and Appraisals ushers in the next generation with andDaughters Auctions, founded by daughters Cassandra and Elysia Turner, along with Jason Krell. &Daughters Notes. One of 500 copies of the first American edition published by The Gemor Press, New York, 1942. Signed by Anais Nin and inscribed to a former owner on the front free endpaper, with 5 copper engravings in the text by Ian Hugo (using a technique from Blake). Cover-boards toned and sightly rubbed to the edges and spine. Nin and her husband moved to New York during WWII, Nin struggled to have her work published due to censorship and lack of interest in European authors, not to mention female authors. A strong and spirited woman who was not easily swayed bought an old printing press and, alongside her lover Gonzalo More, Gemor Press was created in a New York apartment. Nin's husband Ian Hugo would contribute to the art and designs. Due to Gonzalo More's drug use and lackluster attitude to 'waking before noon' (among other things), Gemor press folded in 1949. This piece, Under a Glass Bell, is one of three Gemor Press editions we have listed in this auction. Winter of Artifice was the first book published by Gemor Press and was set by hand and printed by Anais Nin herself making this a unique piece of art and history.
