Description
An Era River Bioma figure. Era River, Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea. Of typical form, the two-dimensional figure with classical features for the region, with arms raised and openwork torso, the body with simple patterning, the hips wider and legs bowing toward the bottom. Orange and white pigments. Likely Mid 20th century.Bioma figures were utilized in displays in the men’s house relating to feasts and headhunting. It is likely that they had numerous functions. There is some evidence that they may have also been either images or instantiations of Imunu spirits. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. Measures 29.5 inches tall x 6 inches wide.
