Gene Davis (D.C., 1920-1985), Equinox, Screenprint, pencil signed lower right and numbered '3/25' lower left, the left side with vertical stripes in blue and purple, the right side with red vertical stripes, stamped with watermark 'BFK Rives France,' paper floating, matted and framed, original receipt on verso from 1987 purchase from Osuna Gallery Contemporary Art, Washington D.C. for $750. Frame size: 36 in. x 48 1/2 in.Gene Davis was a self-taught artist, learning primarily from visits to local museums, who turned to art after a brief career in journalism. Known for his stripe paintings, Davis was a leader of the Washington Color School of artists in D.C. in the 1960s. He taught art at the Corcoran School of Art. Davis's work can be found in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Phillips Collection, the Guggenheim and the Walker Art Center, among others.
