Biography from askart as provided by Dobiaschofsky Auktionen, Bern:
Yves Brayer studied from 1924 at the Academy in Montparnasse and later at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts under Lucien Simon. During this time he exhibited for the first time in the Salon d'Automne and in the Salon des Indépendants. In 1927 he received a state scholarship and went to Spain, where his autodidactic study of the great masters in the Prado had a decisive influence on him. After traveling to Morocco and Italy, he settled in Paris in 1934. In 1942 he designed costumes and sets for a ballet at the Paris Opera. His oeuvre proves to be very diverse: In addition to a preference for copperplate engravings and lithographs, the Frenchman also created large-scale paintings with landscapes, everyday scenes, portraits and still lifes. He was particularly fascinated by the Mediterranean conditions in Spain, Italy and southern France because of their natural, wild harmony. While Brayer mainly preferred dark colors and black in his Spanish period, his Italian period was characterized by ocher and red tones, which he supplemented with green, light yellow and blue tones.
