History
The French speakers called bookends "books support". Bookends didn’t come into use until medieval days, not until bookshelf come into use in the 15th & 16th century, as libraries became crowded and more and more books were in print. By late sixteenth century it was customary to see shelving with books stacked horizontally. Over time this became dangerous and hard to manage. Some would stay it was a luxury to have bookends and still today some bookends do provide a sense of prestige.
