First Edition of THE WORKS OF ANNA LAETITIA BARBAULD with a Memoir by Lucy Aiken. Complete in 2 volumes: Published: London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, 1825. Approx. Size: 5.5" W x 8.5" HExteriors: Fully bound in calf leather, textured covers with gold gilt borders. Spines with gold gilt lettering (morocco labels) and decorations. Gold gilt page edges. Spines have crease cracking with some separation to edges, nonetheless intact and secure.Interiors: Each volume is complete with all pages. Initial endpapers/title pages with scattered foxing (primarily v.2.), the remainder with mild edge toning (see photographs for condition). Each volume has a written inscription on the endpapers "Patricia Cortelyon Winship June 26, 1952".Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743-1825) was an influential teacher, essayist, and women's activist, Barbauld was one of the later generation members of the Bluestocking Circle which included Maria Edgeworth and Hannah More. Her extensive education shaped her work as she pushed for the expansion of women's education. The present title was a celebration of her life and writing, edited and brought to the public by her niece, Lucy Aikin, herself a successful biographer and historian who focused on women. Following her aunt's death, Aikin dedicated herself to ensuring Barbauld's legacy was recorded and proclaimed.
