Description

Of special interest to those who collect the earlier printed pieces of the works of Edgar Allen Poe. First edition/first printing of Edgar Allen Poe's "Mellonta Tauta." This is the recognized first edition and format of this Poe short story. It appeared in this Feb. 1849 issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book (see Heartman and Canny, p. 149). The story is presented as a collection of letters written by a woman during a balloon flight in 2848. Within the letters--directed to a personal friend--she compares contemporary science, philosophy, and customs to those of a thousand years previous, but frequently misinterprets and misunderstands the historic ideas and traditions to the point of absurdity. Hilarious and thought-provoking. This volume contains 6 issues of the popular lady’s literary magazine bound in one volume. There are also pieces by Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Gilmore Simms and Washington Irving. Tips rubbed through. Front hinge cracked at top and hinge cracked, making it a bit wobbly. Rear hinge paper cracked but binding strings strong. Head of spine with small chip at each corner. Quarter leather showing wear. Front edge of rear board worn through at mid area. Gilt titling is still readable, but just so. The two special music insert pages have worn off where they fold over. First free endpaper missing; second endpaper with many folds. Rear endpaper with several folds. All other interior pages appear to be complete and in very good condition with just some minor foxing here and there. All hand-colored fashion plates present. 440 pages plus Table of Contents. Your chance to own a Poe first edition for a reasonable price. 6.5 x 10.
