Description
Bill Hughes (California/Arizona, b. 1932) oil on canvas painting titled "Black Elk's Camp" depicting a Native American encampment set against a mountainous backdrop with cloud formation overhead. Signed "Bill Hughes 1975" lower right. Titled, additionally signed, and inscribed "Collection of John L. McWhorter" en verso of stretcher. Housed in giltwood frame featuring bead course and acanthus and shield decoration with a linen liner and gilt fillet. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 21 5/8" W. Framed: 28 1/2" H x 37 5/8" W. Biography: Bill Hughes joined an art colony on the East Side of Scottsdale, Arizona in 1960. He painted in a method he coined "actualism" or a technique to draw the viewer into the scene so that they could imagine themselves moving through the landscape. Though the artist is known for his landscape works, he did not paint on location and instead painted combinations of what he had seen, what he had remembered, and what he wanted the canvas to be, resulting in inventive compositions. Courtesy of AskArt & "Southwest Art" May 1982, October 1995.
