Description
A Collection of eight (8) Harvard Athletic Association pewter cups, trophies and other assorted ephemera, including one (1) "First Prize High Jump 1904", Loving Cup with 1933 inscription for Newark High School; and six (6) tankards and one (1) mug with inscriptions dating from 1894-1912. Also included are various ephemera items, including four (4) membership certificates for the Harvard Cricket Club (1879; others dating 1886-1896), three (3) booklets of membership tickets (circa 1900-1937) plus a couple of loose tickets, and one (1) 1896 Harvard Portfolio yearbook owned by Ellery H. Clark, with explanatory inscription by his son. Note: Ellery Harding Clark was a Harvard track and field athlete who in 1896 became the first modern Olympic champion in high jump and long jump (and remains the only person to have ever won both). Because of his high grades, Harvard permitted him a leave of absence to travel to the games, which were held in Athens, and were the first Olympic Games of the modern era. Only the Portfolio appears to have been owned by Clark.
