Susan Kliewer (Arizona, b. 1940) cold-painted bronze equestrian sculpture titled "Late for the Sing" depicting a Navajo rider in brisk movement upon his galloping horse holding his wide-brimmed hat to the rear and grasping the reins in his left hand as they traverse the rocky terrain. Signed, dated, and numbered "Susan Kliewer (copyright) 1994 28/35" to rocky naturalistic base. Raised upon a tiered swivel stand with gilt metal placard having title and artist affixed to front edge. Includes certificate of authenticity from the studio of Susan L. Kliewer. Overall with stand: 19 1/2" H x 14 1/2" W x 9 1/2" D. Weight: 42 lbs. Artist biography: Born and raised in southern California, Susan Kliewer prepared sculptures for bronze casting at a foundry for many Arizona sculptors such as John Hampton, Joe Beeler, and Buck McCain. In 1988, she began creating her own sculptures and won the People's Choice Award in 1991 at the National Sculpture Walk in Sedona, Arizona. Her work depicts the Navajo people whom she has lived beside and been inspired by for the past forty years.
