The first quarto edition and the first printed in color. Lear's A Book of Nonsense, first published in 1846, has never gone out of print. It went through 19 printings in his lifetime under several publishers. Artwork after the Dalziel brothers, who are among the most admired and top engravers during the second half of nineteenth century London. Recently listed in the Grolier Club's One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature, Loker, p.150. NY imprint "Scribner, Welford and Co." would became "Scribners, Welford and Armstrong" in 1872.Â
